A counter-thesis to betting on extraction.
@systematicls wrote one of the sharpest pieces I've read this year. "The Prison Of Financial Mediocrity" nails something most people feel but can't articulate: the traditional paths to wealth aren't just hard. They're closed.
The ladder got pulled up. Asset prices inflated. Wages stagnated. AI is eating white-collar jobs faster than anyone predicted. Social media ensures you're never satisfied no matter where you are on the ladder. The math doesn't support patience anymore.
His diagnosis is airtight. I'm not here to argue with it.
His solution is where we part ways.
"Long degeneracy," he says. Be long the platforms. Polymarket. Coinbase. DraftKings. The casinos always win. Most players lose. Understanding this lets you "position for it." You can moralize, or you can make money.
I get the logic. If the game is rigged and you can't change the game, bet on the house.
But here's where I think he's wrong: the game can be changed. And the tool that changes it is the one thing that can't be faked, bought, or botted.
Time.
The Only Thing You Can't Counterfeit
We are dopamine-depleted, attention-fractured, scrolling through an infinite feed of things we'll forget in 24 hours.
No one cares about anything anymore. Not really. Not for long. A token pumps, dumps, and disappears before anyone bothers to read what it does. A project launches, trends for a day, and evaporates into the noise. We've financialized everything and in the process hollowed out our capacity to care.
This is embarrassing. We can do better.
You can fake followers. Anyone with $500 can buy 50,000 accounts. You can fake volume, wash trading is so common it's barely worth mentioning. You can fake a chart. I've watched people write algorithms to draw emotional patterns in charts, to make a 40-minute pump look like organic price discovery. You can manufacture attention, pay KOLs to shill tokens they've never researched.
But you can't fake waiting.
Either you held for 155 days or you didn't. Either you locked your capital for 10 weeks or you bailed on day 1. Sure you can buy back lower, but time is the one variable in hyper-financialized markets that remains incorruptible.
Conviction over time. That's the alternative. Not because patience is virtuous. Because it's the few signals left that can't be counterfeited.
Care Is The Gold Standard
They say attention is the greatest currency. I'd argue attention is the most manipulated currency. It can be bought, manufactured, gamed.
Care is harder.
When your money is locked for 10 days, you suddenly give a shit whether the project is real. You read the docs. You check the contracts. You think about who's building this and why.
We are living through the most significant technological revolution since the internet. AI is rewriting what's possible. The future of industries, of ideas, of coordination, of value creation, is coming. This isn't speculation. It's infrastructure.
Yet the AI revolution is skipping capital formation onchain. Of the 280 billion that was raised since 2022, less than 0.1% was done onchain. You think model tokens wont be billed onchain?
It's because our industry is a joke.
We have the tools to encode economic agreements into immutable code. Smart contracts that execute exactly as written, forever. Governance systems that can't be corrupted by a single actor. Distribution mechanisms that don't require trusting anyone.
Instead, we've built casinos. Fast, extractive, optimized for the house. The extractors have taken tokens and said, thats all I need for a runner.
This is not how we create crypto currencies that will power the flywheels of the future. This is not how we build the tokens and incentive mechanisms that AI-native companies will need to hyper-scale. This is not how we engineer the economic mechanisms that align communities around shared goals.
We learned the lessons. We just haven't converted them to code, yet.
The Scam Business Model Runs on Speed
I've changed how I think about this:
We launch roughly a million tokens per month. Serial deployers drain 80% of all liquidity within 24 hours. A small cartel of 12 wallet clusters engineers nearly 20% of token creations while extracting millions.
The business model is velocity. Deploy. Pump. Drain. Repeat. If one bot can extract $800 from each pump and launch 500 a month, that's $400,000/month in pure extraction. Scale that across the ecosystem and you're looking at tens of millions monthly flowing from retail to a small group of professional extractors. I've been in offices where they draw charts with fakeouts. Those wallets, fake, those comments, scripted.
But here's the thing: that model only works if you can operate fast.
Add a 10-day vesting period and the economics collapse. A scammer who can only run 3 scams per month instead of 500 per month isn't running a business anymore. The velocity that makes extraction profitable becomes impossible.
There's another angle too: capital that's locked can't be recycled. The same $10,000 can't be used to pump and dump 500 different tokens in a month if it's stuck in a vesting contract. The weapon of the extractor, fast-moving capital that hits, extracts, and repeats, gets neutralized. You need to pick where you park your capital, and believe with conviction over time.
Time doesn't just slow down scams. It makes them economically irrational.
On Patience, Art, and Building
Abraham Lincoln once said: "Good things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle."
@systematicls quotes this too. It's the hustler's justification. If you don't grab it, someone else will.
I say fuck that. Good things come if we all wait.
I've seen people fly into the conferences, beat their chests, and raise millions for vaporware. I've visited offices with boiler room energy, overheard calls to cabals, "Get on this coin now or you're not getting another tip!!" Crypto bros with big egos and no product, cashing out with millions while actual builders worry about affording audits.
I've watched artists, craftsmen, founders, all people who actually care about what they're building, get passed over because they don't have the attention, the followers, the hustle.
This is backwards.
I want to see more places where people are comfortable with what they have to give. Our craft needs to be elevated. Where the patient builder matters as much as the promoter.
I want a place where money grows as friends succeed. Where products find markets and capital is created from tokens. I want those tokens to flywheel, circulate and grow as real value gets created.
I wish for an economic incentive vending machine that helps craft the future. Where smart contracts encode the agreements that let strangers collaborate without trusting each other, or the influence of others.
When everyone has to wait, when vesting is universal, when timelocks are enforced by code, there's nothing left for hustlers to take. I wish to understand it well enough to translate it into code. Perhaps with the right prompt, we soon can.
We Still Want To Gamble
I want to be clear about something: this isn't anti-speculation.
Humans gamble. We've always gambled. Risk-taking is wired into us. The desire to bet on an uncertain future, to put something on the line for a chance at asymmetric returns, that's not going away, and I'm not sure it should. Our future depends on it.
@systematicls is right that young people are rationally turning to high-variance bets. When traditional paths are closed and AI is shrinking the timeline for white collar careers, a 5% chance of escape looks better than a 100% chance of treading water forever, only to drown.
The problem isn't that people gamble. The problem is they gamble in casinos engineered for extraction.
Picture a roulette table. But instead of one or two green squares, there are thirty one green two reds and a three blacks. The house edge isn't 2.7% anymore. And even if you beat those odds, bots front-run your spin. The croupier is paid by someone who bet against you. The bets on black are fake, and the chips you bought were already sold by wallets you'll never see.
That's the current market. Most tokens launch and die in hours, if not minutes. We put our trust in influencers instead of smart contracts. We've learned so much about mechanism design, game theory, incentive alignment, and converted almost none of it onchain.
We can do better.
What if dumping early wasn't just discouraged but economically irrational? What if early sellers forfeited tokens to patient holders, claim early, but leave the rest. A direct wealth transfer from the impatient to the committed? What if the vesting curve meant that conviction literally paid, in tokens, enforced by smart contracts?
This isn't idealism. It's engineering.
When speed is removed from hypergambling, conviction over time becomes the new competitive axis. And time is the one currency distributed perfectly equally. You can inherit wealth. You can buy influence. But you can't buy more hours in the day.
Same human impulse to bet on the future. Different architecture. Different outcome.
Long Conviction
@systematicls frames it as a binary: moralize, or be long the platforms.
I'm proposing a third option: build better mechanisms.
Our craft as token engineers is to build for the future. For a better society. Not to enrich a class of leeching extractors with their bots, while retail gets rinsed again and again.
In 2026, I'm not interested in watching from the sidelines. I'm building toward something specific: Systems where patient capital compounds. Where innovation and economic freedom is achieved not through luck, but conviction over time.
Yes, there will be scams. Yes, there will over speculation and hard lessons learned the hard way. It is the cost of betting on the future. The road is long and we're not close to finished.
But we are still so early.
We are nowhere near using tokens in our everyday lives, but that day will come. The decisions we make today, the mechanisms we encode, the systems we design, will shape what comes next. This window doesn't last forever.
There is still hope at the heart of the crypto rebellion. The wild notion that we can build a new economic system. That the people who care about the craft, about art, entreprenuship about creating real value, they can win too. That economic freedom isn't reserved for the extractors and the lucky.
@systematicls bets on the house always winning. I'm betting we can build a better house.
Build with time. Craft your future.
The future is waiting.
